Azar Lawrence Quintet Featuring - Nolan Shaheed, trumpet; Theo Saunders, piano; Jeff Littleton, bass & Marvin 'Smitty' Smith, drums
DESCRIPTION
AZAR LAWRENCE

Lawrence has been compared to John Coltrane his whole working life, but he is not a replica. He plays Coltranes instruments but not his licks and patterns. Even Lawrences sound is a variant. On soprano saxophone he is somewhat more rounded, and has slightly more vibrato on tenor. What he shares with Coltrane is an intensity of passion that overwhelms everything in its path.

The Seeker hits like a sledgehammer from the opening track, Gandhi. Lawrence writes elemental declamatory anthems that serve as launchpads. Their titles convey his understanding of music as a spiritual quest: Spirit Night, The Seeker, Venus Rising. For all his fervor, there is logic and clarity in his onslaught of ideas. When he reenters for a second solo, like on Gandhi, he can jolt you out of your chair. Thomas Conrad, Jazz Times - September 2014

The Seeker is a jaw-dropping joy: great musicians, great compositions and flavor that pays homage to John Coltrane while carving its own driving path. Azar Lawrence flashes soul-filled, spiritual tenor and soprano chops with a brand of fire thats riveting and timeless. For those not familiar with Lawrence, get hip now. Frank Alkyer - Downbeat Magazine, July 2014

DESCRIPTION
In Mexico, the concept of third root refers to its African heritage, too often overlooked. With this in mind, Jose Gurria-Cardenas (aka Gurri) gathered a line up of well-known musicians associated with this important root, to offer a one of a kind concert that will transport us to the colonial times when Indians, Europeans, and Africans communicated through music & dancing. Martha Gonzalez will play jarana and sing, Abraham Laboriel will play the bass, Justo Almario on sax & flute, and Gurri on drums. I will give a brief introduction of our African roots in Mexico and sing a traditional son called "La bruja." My friend Zoila Newton will prepare menudo. Your donation of $20 will cover all expenses, and you may bring your own wine. Limited space. We urge you to RSVP to (562) 805-7770 (paying in advance will be greatly appreciated and asures you a seat). Paypal to quesadijazz@gmail.com or send a check to Casa Arjona payable to Gloria Arjona.
