Love You Madly - A Portrait of Duke Ellington
DESCRIPTION
Archival recordings, magazine articles, concert posters, original photographs, and a significant discography related to jazz pioneer and prolific master composer Duke Ellingtons life and career. Gallery Hours are Tuesday-Saturday 12Noon-5pm. An opening concert on Saturday, March 7 from 3:00-6:00p.m. will feature music performed live by Marcus Miller Freedom Jazz Movement, paying tribute to Duke with a special focus on his work with Max Roach and Charles Mingus on the 1963 release, Money Jungle.

The materials exhibited will chronicle Duke Ellingtons rise to fame through swing in the Cotton Club and big band era as an inventive arranger and charismatic band leader, as well as his grassroots love for blues and experimental jazz. His open philosophies towards jazz as American Music beyond category, rooted in African tradition, influenced younger generations of genre expanders including John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach as well as ongoing relationships with orchestra members saxophonists Otto Hardwick and Johnny Hodges, as well as alliances with contemporaries such as Dizzy Gillespie and Billy Strayhorn. Items presented are entirely from the collection of Alden Kimbrough, and also include items collected by his father Jack Kimbrough, who built a personal relationship with Duke, inviting him to perform in Southern California, including some of his first performances in San Diego.

The life and work of Duke Ellington is this years focus for The William Grant Still Arts Centers Annual African-American Composers Series. Now in its seventh year, the exhibition series celebrates the life and work of African-American composers each spring. Combining community archives with original artwork and music education, past exhibitions in the series have included I Got My Pride: The Blues Tales of Leadbelly (2014), Arkestry of the Cosmos: The Universe Language of Sun Ra (2013), Deeds Not Words: The Life and Work of Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln (2012), A New Day: Nina Simone (2011) and The High Priest of Bop: The Jazz Odyssey of Thelonious Monk (2010).

The music of Duke Ellington is also being presented in conjunction with DCAs African-American Heritage Music Education Program.

Azar Lawrence Sextet ~ A Night With Jazz Titans

Back by popular demand!!

This fusion of heavyweight musicians ?A Night With Jazz Titans?, came together April 25, 2015 for a performance at Long Beach, Ca.?s Seabird Jazz Lounge and the evening lived up to it?s promise to be exactly as the name implied, a superior night of Straight Ahead Progressive Jazz with Azar Lawrence, one of the most powerful and distinctive voices of the post-Coltrane tenor saxophonists, heading a stellar group of jazz artists.

?To hear Mr. Lawrence upshift through his improvisations, honoring a song?s rhythm and harmony and then breaking free of it, is one of jazz?s current thrills, and he understands this music as well as anyone.? Ben Ratliff, New York Times, December 6, 2014

Azar Lawrence Sextet with Special Guests, prolific hard bop trumpeter, Oscar Brashear, veteran trombone master, Motown?s ?George Bohanon, heavyweight drummer Roy McCurdy; Featuring, Theo Saunders, who has been described as ?provocative and mind bending? on piano, and Jeff Littleton one of the most versatile and in demand bassists on the West Coast.

Uptown Beach Streets
DESCRIPTION
On Saturday, June 6, 2015, Atlantic Avenue will be transformed for an Open Street event
called "Beach Streets Uptown." The event will open up Atlantic Avenue for walking,
bicycling, and socializing, by temporarily closing the street to vehicle traffic from 9:00 am
to 4:00 pm. The transformation will stretch from Harding Avenue to Wardlow Road.
?We finally have our own version of Ciclovia, and it's an all-ages family event that will
showcase the best of Long Beach," said Mayor Robert Garcia. ?I'm looking forward to
spending the day exploring Uptown by bike and I hope the whole city will come out and
support this great event."
Open Street events are gaining popularity throughout North America. The events promote
the pursuit of innovative strategies to achieve environmental, social, economic, and public
health goals. By repurposing streets for cyclists, pedestrians, and other non-motorized
users, cities are encouraged to consider other ways our streets can be used.
?This event will be a great way for the community to socialize, enjoy new and familiar
businesses, and learn about different methods of getting around our beautiful city,? said
Councilmember Roberto Uranga.
Entertainment will be provided at several nodes along the route, and at the major hubs of
Bixby Knolls, Scherer Park, & Houghton Park. Several intersections for vehicles to cross
Atlantic Avenue will be maintained along the route.
?Beach Streets Uptown is a great opportunity for our neighborhoods, businesses and
visitors to rediscover the Atlantic corridor from a unique perspective,? said Councilmember
Al Austin. ?We?re looking forward to showcasing the best that Uptown Long Beach has to
offer.?
The City?s Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, and the Health Department will
provide healthy active living activities and information.
?North Long Beach is undergoing a significant renaissance, and Beach Streets Festival is
a great way to showcase the great neighborhoods, cultural resources, and businesses in
North Long Beach,? said Councilmember Rex Richardson.

Acceptable modes of transportation along the route include: bicycles, skates, rollerblades,
skateboards, walking etc. The only motorized vehicles allowed must be officially marked
means of transportation for those with disabilities.
Beach Streets Uptown is funded by LA County Metro, and will be preceded on April 7,
2015 by Beach Streets Grand Prix View, which opens up the Toyota Grand Prix of Long
Beach race track to pedestrians, joggers, bicyclists and strollers.

California?s Premiere Old West Convention Mounts Up
M7 Con begins planning for the 3rd annual convention set for October 2015 in Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles, CA.,--- Start marking your calendars Western and Magnificent Seven fans! That?s right the
3rd annual M7 Con is riding into Los Angeles, California October 23 and 24, 2015 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. All staff members have mounted their horses and headed out on their journey to plan the best M7 Con fans will experience. While heading into our third year, we are keeping the event a two day Con in order to expand out to other Western panelists and possible actors. We want our audience, new members and veteran members, to get their money?s worth and from the looks of the initial plans that will definitely be the case. If we do get more actors and/or panelists the Con may be extended.
M7 Con, in the past two years, has brought to its fans amazing panelists that have shared their in-depth knowledge of things from the Old West and the television series. M7 Con has also brought lifetime chances to fans to meet actors from the M7 series; such as Rick Worthy, Anthony Starke, Dale Midkiff, Andrew Kavovit and guest star Daren Flam. During our inaugural year we had series executive producer and writer, Pen Densham on site as well. Each year, we as a staff, strive to bring the audience bigger and better experiences.
While our actors and panelists line-up has just begun initial planning, M7 Con has extended an open invitation to new and past actors and panelists. We will be expanding into different areas of the Western genre and the history surrounding the Old West this year. We want to give the audience an experience of a lifetime and for them to want to return year after year. M7 Con was started by fans for fans and we hold that to a very high regard.
We are still in the early planning stages but along with the actors? main panel, this year will also feature a variety of Old West expert guest panelists, autograph and photo ops, various vendors and special events.
We hope to have a full house on October 23 & 24, 2015 and that each guest has a magnificent time.
*If you have a business or company that would like more information about our vendor and/or sponsorship opportunities please contact Amy at svc@m7con.org
**If you would like more information about participating in a panel please contact Amanda at program@m7con.org
